Four Reasons to Use Your 401(k) Brokerage Window

by Billy Funderburk, CFP®, MBA

First of all, what is a brokerage window? Many 401(k), 403(b) & 457s have a brokerage window which allows you to move your retirement plan money through it so that you can have a financial professional manage the money. This money stays within your current retirement plan account. To determine if you can do this, contact your plan administrator for details.

Why do this?

Content in this material is for general information only and not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual.

  1. Investment Choices - Within your retirement plan, you will be limited to the investment choices available within the company plan. By accessing your brokerage window, you will be increasing the choices and flexibility of your retirement savings.

  2. Professional Advise - This allows you to not only have your money managed by a professional, but may allow you to obtain financial advice on a myriad of subjects.

  3. The Value of Advise - There are numerous studies suggesting that the average investor may benefit with better returns by utilizing professional investment advice. The best known of these studies is the Dalbar study, which has been conducted annually for the last 22 years, each time obtaining similar results.

  4. Start Now - You no longer have to wait until you leave your employer and rollover the retirement plan into an IRA, so that you can obtain professional financial advice. You can now do this within your current retirement plan account.
